Federal Government Dismisses Parents, Plans Takeover of School Vending Machines
“Following their far-reaching overhaul of the school lunch program, the federal government is completing its control over what children consume in school – and in the process completely obliterating choice and eroding parental responsibility – by initiating plans for a takeover of school vending machines,” says Orit Sklar, founder and executive director of the grassroots coalition My Food. My Choice!.
“For years, industry has voluntarily made changes to its products to stave off government regulation. But capitulating to the government never works. Each time, the government rules their efforts insufficient and proceeds with an absolute takeover. Regardless of the changes industry makes and the nanny state tactics the government employs, the single most important factor in children’s health is parental involvement.”
“Just this past week we learned of two incidents at a school in North Carolina where children sent to school with perfectly fine homemade lunches were given items from the school cafeteria after employees acting like the Food Police inspected their meals and deemed them insufficient. The message the government is sending to our children is that government, not your parents, know best.”
“When unelected bureaucrats in Washington are dictating our diets, parents are rendered powerless. It’s time the Food Police in Washington realize that children’s nutritional needs are the responsibility of parents. And, when it comes to schools, decisions are best made at the local level where parents can hold local leaders accountable.”
My Food. My Choice! is the citizen-led counterweight to local and national government bullies who’ve decided that the path to unlimited power is through our stomachs.
